Liquid and Gel-based Explosives Detectors
Who says liquid and gel-based explosives can't be detected? Rapiscan Systems is developing various devices that use low energy X-rays to detect liquid or gel-based explosives, metallic and non-metallic weapons, AND solid explosives. According to Rapiscan, some of these devices could be deployed "this afternoon."
So what's the hold up? The explosive-detecting machines can cost up to $250,000, a lot of dough when you're talking about installing them in all security checkpoints. The detectors would also slow down airports because each briefcase, purse or other carry-on bag has to be put in a special drawer for analysis. Still, it's good to know that these types of detectors are possible. Now it's all about tweeking the systems to reduce cost, and to speed-up the analysis process.
