We've been waiting a long time for Wimax, and after all the Wimax hype we're almost there.
Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have decided to work together to promote and construct the first nationwide mobile broadband network and service using WiMAX technology. This will certainly help bring Mobile Wimax service to the masses in the U.S. who can't wait use Wimax mobile Internet access to wirelessly download full-length movies and music, conduct live video-conferences from remote locations, and perform other interactive multi-media applications anywhere in the Wimax coverage area. With Intel providing embedded chipsets in computing and consumer electronic devices, and a broad range of manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung, and Nokia readying their Wimax devices, 2008 may well finally be the year of Wimax.
Sprint Nextel will focus its Wimax efforts primarily on geographic areas covering approximately 185 million people in the U.S., including 75 percent of the people located in the 50 largest markets, while Clearwire will focus on areas covering approximately 115 million people. Together the two companies will provide seamless Mobile Wimax roaming between their respective Wimax network territories. They will also be working jointly on Wimax product and service evolution, shared infrastructure, branding, marketing and distribution.
